The story takes place in SC and alternates between present day and memories of childhood. George and Magnolia, childhood sweethearts, are now living their last days in a nursing home. After receiving an anonymous gift, followed by letters from Maggie's long-lost brother, George is forced to re-live the past and work through some painful memories. Despite his own failing health and his almost completely unresponsive wife's condition, George takes them and another resident and childhood friend, Joe, back to their hometown for answers. Their trip serves as an opportunity for healing and freedom from the past.
The characters are beautifully created and the memories are carefully woven together to draw the reader in to the story. There is just the right amount of mystery and unanswered questions that keeps you reading. I enjoyed the book and would recommend it.
